What is the InS2PiRED study?
The goal of the Implementation Strategies for Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring in Racially and Ethnically Diverse Populations (InS2PiRED) study is to determine the effectiveness of self-measured blood pressure (SMBP) monitoring and our proposed implementation strategies in a diverse, multi-lingual, low-income population in an urban safety-net system.
Why is the InS2PiRED study important?
- Half of Americans with hypertension are uncontrolled, resulting in preventable strokes, myocardial infarctions, and heart failure.
- These poor outcomes are disproportionately borne by low socioeconomic status and racial/ethnic minority populations who have higher rates of hypertension and uncontrolled hypertension.
- Because of cost, transportation, or time-related barriers to attending in-person visits,8 these populations have benefited less from interventions focused on increasing the frequency or quality of in-person care.
- This is exacerbated by low socioeconomic status and minority populations disproportionately receiving care in safety net settings that have constraints on expanding in-person care and are stewards of limited funds to support complex patients.
- Successful hypertension interventions for low socioeconomic status minority populations must address patient-related obstacles to in-clinic care and safety net resource constraints.
- A home blood pressure monitoring program designed for safety net health systems and their patients is an ideal solution to address these multi-level barriers.
